There’s Something in the Hay!

We’ve converted Hal and Charlie into free range horses.  Rather than turning them out in the arena, we just open their stall doors and let them wander where ever they want.  The back yard is fenced, why confine them to one section?

To further boost their ‘environmental enrichment’, and despite Hal’s issues with hay, from time to time we’re dropping a bale of bermuda hay (the less tasty kind) so the boys can get in touch with their herbivore roots.  They pick at it, but don’t dive in like they did when hay was their primary food source, and when they got alfalfa or timothy, the yummier kinds.

Why not? I have the only horse who can't eat hay on a regular basis without getting digestive upset! Thanks Hal!

Bermuda hay is very loose and messy, unlike alfalfa or timothy which hold together.  As loose at it is, and as relatively gentle as the horses seem to be with it, I couldn’t understand why it keeps ending up in a pile resembling what the grower had just cut down.

Tonight I found the answer.  It’s not the hay that’s the problem, it’s what’s in it.    It appears we have some sort of burrowing creature inhabiting our hay bales.

It appears we have an insect of some sort in the hay!

Sarah’s Something Special Day

Recently, we instituted mandatory Something Special Days.   Once a week, each dog is to be separated from The Hoard for 100% attention.  No cell phone, no distractions, just 100% attention focused on one dog.

Today was Sarah’s Something Special Day.

As an added bonus, she had both Crabby and me there to share it with her.

Does this look like a happy girl to you?

Poor Droopy Faced Emmi :(

Emmi’s face swelled up today, so off to the ER we went.  Turns out, she had an abscess, poor thing.

The abscess has been drained and flushed, a bravery hamburger administered, and Emmi will be on pain killers for a few days and antibiotics for a week.

Is it possible for anyone to look at this face and not feel her pain?

Poor Emmi. To make matters worse, she can't go on Sunday Family Desert Walk tomorrow.

Where’r We Goin?!

DASH! in route to his special DASH! and Mom only walk.
DASH! in route to his special DASH! and Mom only walk.  Sometimes I think it’s the ride and not the walk that he gets most excited about.

Never forget that often times it’s not the destination, but the journey.  Whether it’s to the gas station or visiting with friends, no dog would pass up the opportunity to go for a ride.  Don’t waste opportunities.

Maiden Voyage of the USS Sea Woof

Crabby and Morty spent the day yesterday testing out the USS Sea Wolf (Sea Eagle inflatable kayak, courtesy of Santa) on Lake Pleasant.

From what I’m told, there were some great photos and videos of the adventure, but the telephone on which they were recorded is now at the bottom of the lake, much to the chagrin of the phone’s owner, who was captaining another vessel.

All we are left with are these, taken on Crabby’s camera.

That’s it folk, that’s all we have 😦

For what it’s worth, the other photographer’s phone is in a waterproof case, and the videos and pics may still be retrievable.   If anyone with scuba certification were to need an excuse to dive, or want some search experience, Crabby would be more than happy to give the location of where the phone went in…  just saying…

Sarah Happy Feet… Almost

Sarah’s handicap gives her the most endearing gait when she runs.  We call her Sarah Happy Feet when she gets in The Zone.  Blessed be the photographer who can capture Sarah Happy Feet at just the right moment.

Huge smile and legs all over the place, it can brighten anyone’s day.

Crabby and I had Sarah out on the desert this evening, and the light happened to be perfect.  What a great time to get the last Sarah Happy Feet photos of 2014!

The way to capture the best Happy Feet picture is to get Sarah started, then keep the finger on the shutter button until she either runs me over (grace and depth perception are not Sarah’s strong points) or passes me.  The hope is the last shot before collision or “sprint by” will be THE one.

Figures...
I present to you, Gertie Photo Bomb, 2014.

Christmas Came Early to Run A Muck Ranch

Y’all know how Crabby and his Main Mutt Morty like to get out into the wilderness.   You should also know how happy Willy gets whenever Crabby and Morty leave.

I found the PERFECT gift for the 3 of them!

Parts 1 and 1a were here yesterday. Fortunately, neither Crabby nor Morty could figure out what was coming next.
